Upcoming Interfaith Events

This resource offers insights and recommendations for understanding and addressing bigotry targeting Muslims, Jews, and Arabs and Palestinians (who are often Christian), both in this moment and going forward. This guide is intended to prompt discussion and reflection on the language being used and how we build relationships in this particular time.

This resource is brought to you by the Shoulder-to-Shoulder Campaign
During the Summer our interfaith activity will be paused, and we will return right after the High Holy Days of our Jewish neighbors in the Fall. In the meantime, we will be posting special online and local events you may be interested in. The power of religious pluralism to gather us together is more important than ever. Faith is a bridge!

Save the date for July 2 at 2pm ET for a LIVE virtual screening of American Muslims: A History Revealed, a six-part PBS documentary series that uncovers 200 years of Muslim American history, from enslaved African Muslims to diverse immigrant communities that shaped the U.S. Picture Motion has launched a screening tour to bring this vital series to your community.

During this event, we'll watch Episode Six in the series: How Islam Influenced Black Americans in 1920s Chicago. In this film, host Malika Bilal (Senior Presenter, Al Jazeera English) tells the story of these early Black American Muslim communities through a woman named Florence Watts, who moved to the bustling South Side of Chicago around 1910, where she found work as a cook and a maid.

In this time when Muslim and immigrant communities are among those being targeted in increasingly dangerous and harmful ways, it's more important than ever to uplift real stories and histories of who American Muslims are in all their diversity and beauty, and to highlight their rich fabric in our country's tapestry since the founding of our nation (and even before). We hope you'll join us for this important event coinciding with the celebration of our country's founding (July 4th)

A Story of The Syeeds

The story of pluralism in the U.S. is unfolding in real time, with everyone contributing to its creation. We build pluralism by being our full selves engaging with one another across our differences to cultivate mutual flourishing. This short film “Planting Seeds for Pluralism in America: The Syeed Family” highlights Dr. Sayyid and Rafia Syeed as two figures, among many, who have contributed to the American interfaith movement for equitable pluralism. As American Muslims, The Syeeds (specifically Rafia and Dr. Sayyid) built a tight web of trusted multifaith relationships locally in Bloomington, Indiana, and nationwide. This short documentary-style narrative shares their journey of principled pluralism through the perspective of their eldest daughter, Afeefa. It looks at the values and relationships that shaped their lives, along with the movements and discussions they were part of that influenced American pluralism from building American Muslim organizations and growing interfaith coalition efforts including (but not limited to) the Shoulder to Shoulder Campaign.
